Over the last 18 months have seen a significant advance in the use of mobile technology and wireless Internet access in Australia. This space has been hitherto dominated by providers of broadband radio such as Unwired Australia and Personal Broadband Australia before, which offers WiMAX solutions. However, the dynamic Competition has changed dramatically in 2006, after 3G services are now available from the four mobile operators, which accelerated even more by the introduction of HSDPA or 3.5G services by the end of 2006 and early 2007.

For the first time in 2006, the number of mobile broadband users – users 3G/3.5G cellular basis of the Internet connection – wireless broadband has exceeded (pre-WiMAX) users and taking into account current market conditions, expects users of mobile broadband Telsyte outnumber their counterparts wireless broadband to two against one in five years' time.

Together, users wireless broadband and mobile account for 9% of all users of broadband in Australia in 2007. In 2011, more than one in five broadband users in Australia will be based either on the cell, or base of technology WiMAX for its high-speed Internet.

Delays in the marketing rules of WiMAX base offer are slowing the growth of WiMAX in Australia. Which was also compounded by the aggressive push 3G/3.5G mobile operators in place, with deeper pockets.

Telsyte estimates that WiMAX still has a good chance, but his window of opportunity closes. The wireless broadband in Australia has continued to record impressive growth, growing by 68% in 2006, the user base coverage remains low and limited to major cities. Start-up wireless providers of broadband services such as Unwired Australia and Personal Broadband Australia BigAir, which operate networks of property, still face a difficult task of having to expand coverage and engage customers quickly, keeping cost effectiveness. Many of them also face the challenge of raising capital, same time.

Some good news is being awaited and standards-based WiMAX is expected to debut in the first half 2008, which should increase market interest in wireless broadband. Standards also should result in lower CAPEX and OPEX operators and EPC cheaper for customers.

With the introduction of WiMAX delay of nearly two years and the rapid progress of operators mobile HSDPA, WiMAX battle against the cellular basis 3/3.5G to become the wireless broadband of choice is increasingly difficult. Telsyte believes that WiMAX has a window 18 months of opportunity until the end of 2008 to prove itself as a viable business, or is likely to follow the path of australiae WiFi hotspots, which have become essentially free services in some places like the airport and hotel lounges or become free by the various States and local governments.
