Assistive Technology Debate
The importance of assistive technology debates is one that
could literally
mean life or death for a
select few. Without debates on certain products, the equipment
would most likely never be questioned.
Debates ensure that all issues are addressed, and therefore
corrected. Assistive technology is anything that, when
used properly, helps its user to complete a task in which they
would otherwise be unable to do.
While the need for assistive technology is growing rapidly,
manufacturers are starting to offer new inventions that could
help disabled persons or elderly persons with health conditions
to live a more independent life.
The only problem with some of these innovations is that they
are not necessarily as easy to use as they were made to be.
A few of the computer programs and
software offered are supposed to help visually impaired persons
to see the computer screen more efficiently, but many users
have commented that the programs freeze, thus causing them to
lose valuable data.
Once a computer freezes too many times, it tends to have
more critical problems, and could eventually become useless.
Manufacturers of these programs are currently investigating the
cause of these difficulties, which without the debate would
have never happened.
Assistive technologies are generally programmed to be
adjustable to the user’s needs, abilities, and sometimes
mobility. Some of these devices are too difficult for the
disabled to configure, and therefore are an ineffective piece
of equipment. Other devices simply do not adjust for different
levels of requirements, which in effect leaves the user in need
of more assistance than when they began.
If enough caregivers and disabled persons raise questions as
to the quality and usefulness of the devices they use,
corporations will check every aspect of the product and make
sure that it is top-of-the-line in assistive technology.
Without the opportunity to communicate freely with
civilization on a regular basis, persons with disabilities will
not succeed in life to the best of their abilities. An
organization in England is currently testing how effective
assistive technology is in helping persons with learning
disabilities to obtain and maintain a job. The TATE (Through
Assistive Technology to Employment) was created to give
disabled persons the chance to thrive in a workplace
setting.
They believe that with help, persons with learning
disabilities are very capable of having, and being quite
successful in a career. The only questions raised are on the
effectiveness of the program. Although there are a few
skeptics, the organization is continuing to help persons with
learning disabilities learn the basic fundamentals required to
work in society.
It is pertinent that disabled, impaired, and elderly with
mobility difficulties be given the acute care and attention
that they need in order for their lives to be as vibrant and
effortless as is physically possible.
While caregivers carry the duty of taking care of the needs
of disabled people, they cannot be completely responsible for
the disabled person’s actions throughout the day. When
caregivers are not available to the dependent, they need
devices around them that can make their lives easier.
Even when caregivers are with the disabled, they should have
technologies available to help them in efficiently caring for
the dependent. Persons with disabilities must participate in
society to feel accepted and equal, and with efficient
assistive technology devices, they are doing just that.
