Information technology encompasses a wide range of topics. In Michigan, particularly in Alpena, the Michigan
Information Technology Center or MITC
has been in operations since early in 2005.
The MITC features a next generation conferencing multimedia technologies
and high speed internet connectivity service that is very well ahead of its time.
Both Internet2 and Merit Network call the Michigan Information Technology Center home. There are also plans
underway to build a new data center as soon as possible.
The MITC is located very near to the University of Michigan Ann Arbor campus and works in close proximity with
the university and the State of Michigan to link next generation technological strategies.
The Michigan Information Technology Center serves as Michigan’s state and
regional
information portal and facilities the co-location of the leading edge information technology organizations.
It also provides a unique location for new IT companies in Alpena or Michigan in general to get their start and
for those already established Information Technology companies to network with Michigan’s and Alpena’s IT
community.
The current conference center located with Michigan’s MITC is an ahead of its time facility that was designed to
showcase advanced technology industries and to serve as a forerunner for marketing Michigan’s state and regional
center for information technology.
Information Technology needs are addressed in a variety of ways in Alpena by the Alpena Area Chamber of
Commerce.
Training topics for this field include XML programming languages for webpage design and e-commerce as well as
Cisco Certified Network Associate and Engineer for network administrators, C++ and Visual Basics 6.0 for engineers
and programmers and Microsoft Office User certifications for professional applications.
Since information technology does cover a wide range of subjects not only in Alpena, Michigan but everywhere
around the world, there are many organizations dedicated to the growth and expansion of the industry.
The Center for Information Technology Integration in Michigan has been in operations since 1986. The CITI
engages regularly in the advanced development of information technology in Michigan as well as research projects
and partnerships with several external sponsors.

Information Technology Environment. Results from studies and other research projects are forwarded to the IT
