Information Technology Strategic Plan
For those who own or merely work in the world of business, it is highly important to have an information
technology strategic plan. To create a strategic planning process you must keep a few key points in mind.
Whether you are a small company or a large corporation and regardless of your budget, there are many
objectives that must be performed in order to see success with your information technology plan.
You need to develop a regular habit to review and define your strategic goals at least annually. For larger
businesses it is important to meet with leaders in your company and specify a list of business goals for the next
year or two.
Include in your goals any new products that you may want to introduce as well as any business growths regarding
facility expansions, employee increase or modified revenue targets.
You should also regularly review and analyze your current information technology infrastructure.
Summarize your current use of LAN, WAN, mainframe, computer, server and
software inventory.
A good rule is to make an outline of any strengths or weaknesses in the system that you currently use and review these frequently for any needed upgrades. It
is also important to stay updated on any new upgrades that are being released and compare those with your
needs now and in the near future.
Determining your technology goals is important for your business success and security. Make a list of any goals
that you have for your business for the next one to two years which may support your current business
processes.
You should also note any infrastructure requirements that you may meet for new business initiatives. Be sure to
include your LAN and WAN expansions or conversions as well as your internet and intranet usage, server deployments,
any major upgrades and/or application development.
You should create a list of any proposed projects for the near future. Each new project should be linked to your
business and technology goals and should be defined by which are necessary for the continued maintenance of your
business.
Be sure that you are placing a good timeline on your projects. You should also compare your future business
needs with your proposed future budget.
During this strategic planning process be sure to review the performance of your key vendors, assess your network
protocol standards and evaluate your current operating system standards.
It is always a good idea to research where current information technology trends may be heading to ensure that
your company or business is able to keep up with future technologies. Your goal with an information technology
strategic plan is to reach a point with your business in which you are backed by a supportable plan and a
reasonable set of technology standards.
These results should show a link back to your strategic goals and the major processes of your business overall.
Remember that strategic planning can encompass a wide range of topics and take on many forms.
The important thing to remember is to document your plan and be sure to include everything that will help your
business to securely operate. Business plans take on many forms.
Keeping yourself updated of the latest technology developments with regards to information storage, delivery and
other aspects will help to ensure that your business grows as technology grows.
